Deschutes Double

This event is timed as ideal training for racers and crew leading up to Race Across Oregon, Race Across the West or Race Across America.  Solo, 2 Person Relay and 4 Person Relay divisions are available.  200 miles with 15,000 feet of climbing on lightly trafficked roads.  About 180 miles of the DD course are also in the Race Across Oregon so this is a great way to get a feel for the route.

The Deschutes Double kicks off the Northwest Ultra Cup.  Complete DD, RAO and Cascade Ultra for not only an incredibly challenging season but some fun awards as well.
This route has been a part of my training program since my early RAAM days.  I love the quiet roads, what I consider to be beautiful scenery and challenging terrain.  The headwinds on the other hand...

Rules

This is the one event I direct that I also race.  I have some pretty firm feelings about RDs racing in their own events.  I prefer to be the head official.  I still am but, unlike every every other event I direct, I won't be driving by taking your photo, offering encouragement and support.  This is a huge part of my Race Across the West training.  That said, I don't list myself in the results and certainly don't take any prizes.  I'll just be on my bike rather than driving back and forth along the route.  However, as in RAO and Cascade Ultra, my phone is headquarters.  You'll text me your start time and time station check-ins.  Also contact me if you're having any problems.  Yes, this is a training ride for me but your safety comes first and I will drive out to assist you if needed.

The rules are pretty simple really:

- We're on open roads so obey all traffic laws.

- Direct follow is allowed once through Condon.

- Do NOT impede traffic.  Watch your rearview mirror and, if you see a vehicle approaching, move out of the way.  Either pull your vehicle to the side of the road or pass your rider an pull off as soon as you find a space wide enough for your vehicle.

- Riders must have a flashing white light on the front of the bike at all times between 7AM and 7PM and a steady white light on the front of the bike from 7PM to 7AM.

- Riders must have a flashing red tail light at all times.  This one needs to be bright - really bright.  Not a cheapo get around the rules light.  No problem at all with you having two tail lights - one steady and one flashing.

- Vehicles must always pull off to the right side of the road when engaged in the race i.e. supporting your rider with arm width clearance between the driver's side door and the pavement.  Of course you may turn left to purchase groceries, gas, etc.

- Vehicles must have a slow moving vehicle triangle and bikes ahead signage on the back.  I have reflective, magnetic signage that meets these requirements so please let me know if you need them.  They're available at a very low price.  Roof mounted amber flashing lights are not necessary for this event.  Of course you may use them if you have them and want.

- No public nudity.  This and impeding traffic are the ones that get the most aggressive response from the general public.  I'd prefer no calls from angry farmers or tourists.

- Sign out when you start.  You may begin between the hours of 5AM and 6AM.  Text me your start time as soon as you have service (which should be as you pass the Maupin Visitor Center about 1 mile from Imperial River Company).

- Text me your Time Station arrival time along with rider/team name as soon as you have service.  Condon has great reception as does Shaniko.  Everywhere else is hit or miss.  Service is available throughout but it's spotty.

- If you think you're cheating you probably are...so don't.  It gains you nothing.  My events are the B Movies of the ultra world - you're looking at the difference between a bobble head clown doll, a whoopee cushion or something from the Adult Shop when it comes to prizes and placing.  We're out here for fun.  No officials can see everything so a lot of ultra racing is on the honor system - that's the way I grew up with this and that's the way I like it.
