Ring of Fire 2006 Results
Racing is awesome today! In the 12 Hour race, Chris Hopkinson is leading and looking strong. Followed closely by Kenneth Philbrick and Chip Keyes. In the 24 Hour race, Urs Koening and Ben Larson have been within minutes for the entire first 120 miles. I am curious to see who will pull into the start/finish pit first.
In the women’s field, Martha Walsh is kicking some serious bootie – she averaged 15.8 on the first 111 miles, and came in 4th overall in the 12 hour group.
All of the 12 Hour racers have finished the day loop. In front we still have Hopkinson, just ahead of Philbrick and Keyes. All are looking strong. The weather, while cool this morning has definitely gotten warmer – it’s about 86 degrees in Maupin right now.
All of the 24 hour racers have past the 111 mile mark and at 3:30 race time I am expecting our first 24’s to come in anytime.
Urs Koening is the first 24 hour racer to finish the day loop, averaging 17.3 he seems to be the man to beat. And he is still in the lead, finishing his first ‘night’ loop – with an average of 17.3 mph.
Our 2 man team has also just finished a lap – averaging 17.3 they look great and seem to be having fun. They’ve also just finished a ‘night’ loop – Keep going guys!
Wow, Chris Hopkinson is really kicking it – not only is he winning the 12 hour race, he’s averaging 18.1 mph
Tight racing in the 12 hour race between Hopkinson and Philbrick – only time will tell.
Jim Trout has withdrawn from the 24 hour, after finishing 1 day loop and 1 night loop for a total of 182.6 miles.
Only 40 more minutes of racing to go in the 12 hour race – stay tuned!
Chris Hopkinson has won the 12 Hour race with 215.8 total miles averaging an amazing 17.98 mph.
Martha Walsh has won the 12 hour women’s race with 183.2 miles – for an average of 15.27 mph.
John Climaldi has set a new record for a recumbent racer – with 178.2 miles for an average speed of 14.85.
Ben Larson has called it quits after 2 night loops for a 24 hour total of 208.2 with a 8.68 mph 24 hour average.
Tom Letsinger is having a great race, looking strong and feeling great.
Hugh Gapay just rolled through for his third night loop – he’s looking great and riding well. He’s an 1:10:00 behind 24 hour race leader Urs Koening – will he close the gap overnight?
Glen Johnson has overcome a few hard miles – but has bounced back and is ready to fight.
John Henry Maurice is looking strong and feeling optimistic about reaching his race goals – he’s set a off the bike limit of 45 minutes – can he stick to his guns as the night goes on?
John Spurgeon looks great – happy as always. Look out for this guy at RAAM 07- the Sabertooth Salmon just might be the first single speed RAAM finisher ever….
Michael Harshbarger is still moving – he’s had a long day but is forging ahead. After completing a day loop and a night loop, Michael has had enough of our crazy 24 hour race. Congratulations Michael on a great effort!
We’ve had a couple of night time flats – a double flat for Tom, and a front flat for Urs.
John Spurgeon fans- he’s still racing, but did stop for a nap – stay tuned – we should see his speed pick up!
Chris Hopkinson forced us to post positive commments about him on various British cycling websites. Gees! Look for Chris’ 1000 mile record attempt in the next month or so back in England.
At 4:11 a.m. John Spurgeon rolled in after a partial lap to call it a night.
Glenn Johnson has got a second wind. He’s revived during the early morning hours and is not only riding faster, he’s taking much shorter breaks at the pit area. He readjusted his goal of 350 down to 340. Glenn just left for his last lap and everyone’s hoping he makes it!
We rudely kicked Hugh out of the start/finish area to send him on his way to a goal of 360 – he has an hour and a half to make 18 miles. If you think that sounds easy you haven’t ridden the Maupin climb 8 times tonight.
4:30 AM Traffic is weird – there was a quick run of pickup trucks towing boats – a steelhead run is in progress and the anglers are up early to kill some fish.
6:30:00 – Urs Koening has won the 24 hour event with a total of 394.8 miles – Congrats!
It looks like Hugh Gapay will be second – Tom Letsinger is third with 342.2
Glen Johnson is fourth with 340.6 (can you believe how close this was)
John Henry Maurice was fifth –
More updates to come – time for breakfast!
