Rider Down

Wade Baker, RAO ’05, ’06, was injured on Friday November 2, 2008 at 8:00 PM Wade was riding at night after work as usual. He was on Halcon Street in Atascadero, CA near Paloma Park riding at around 20 mph. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a deer in the middle of the left hand lane. He was in the middle of the right hand lane and started yelling at the deer. The deer ran right in front of him and he hit the right side of the deer’s hind quarters. The front wheel went to the right and he fell off on his left side. He was on his back and propped up on his elbows in the middle of the right hand lane.. He knew his leg was broken after feeling a bump on it and by the fact that he could not move. He lay there for about 10 minutes. A car came towards him with its bright lights on. The car slowed and then just left. He was yelling for help. Another car came along and slowed down and had his window down and told Wade to get off the road. Wade said he could not move and to call 911. Finally the ambulance came and took him to Twin Cities Hospital in Templeton, CA. He is having open reduction and internal fixation done to the left femur.

Wade went into surgery around 1 PM Saturday. He is at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo (805) 546-7600. Please pass this on to any riders or anyone that may want to get in touch with him, send a card … whatever. I know he would really appreciate any prayers, good wishes etc. coming his way.
