Meet the racers ctd:
Tuesday May 31, 2005 by George
Doug Peterson: I know very little about Doug other than the fact that he has an amazing crew chief in Sandy Earl. Part of being a successful racer is surrounding yourself with a top crew. Sandy’s track record is excellent. She was the RAO women’s solo division champ (and 3rd overall) in 2000, 2nd place solo woman (4th overall) in ‘01 and has since crew chiefed for Kit Rudd’s ‘02 official finish and was the crew chief for Patty Jo Struve when she won the 2003 women’s solo division and qualified for RAAM. Team Peterson knows the course well and has loads of experience. I look for Doug to have a great race.
Carl Poppe: Carl raced RAO solo in ‘03 placing 5th. Poppe was out of racing this past year and RAO will be his first competition since the lay off. Carl’s goals are to have fun and an official finish. Part of what makes this such a great sport are the wonderful people who participate – Carl is one of the best.
Eric Gutierrez: Another racer I don’t have a resume on though I know Eric’s background is in triathlons – obiviously a strong time trialist.
Saunders Whittlesey: Other than Allen Larsen & John Spurgeon, no racer generated as much e-mail from you as Whittlesey. The SandMan is a USCF Cat II racer who, last year, set the record at Boston-Montreal-Boston. B-M-B = 750 miles loaded with ridiculously steep climbs. Sandy finished in 48 hours…all accounts are this racer from MA looked happy and relaxed the entire time. Sandy will be writing the RAO article for Ultracycling Mag – maybe you can slow him down by offering an interview on the road… If you’re looking for pre-race favorites you can add Saunders to your list.
